  • 2 cups unbleached white flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar, for sprinkling on top
  • 1/2 cup cold butter or vegan butter, in cubes
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk, any kind
  • 1 tsp milk, for top
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp melted butter or vegan butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, sea salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles peas.
  4. Stir in milk and molasses until just combined.
  5. Gently form the dough into a circle about ¾ inch thick on a cookie sheet.
  6. Brush the top with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
  7. Cut into eight wedges before baking.
  8. Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. For optional icing, whisk together powdered sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  10. Ice the warm scones and serve.
