  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (112g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups (310g) sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao), chopped
  • 2 1/4 cups (504g) unsalted butter
  • 8 cups (920g) powdered sugar
  • 1 cup (114g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 tbsp (75-105ml) water/cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time followed by the vanilla extract; mix well.
  5. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients with the buttermilk until just combined.
  6. Melt the bittersweet chocolate and stir half of the batter into it to create a marbled effect.
  7. Alternate spooning dollops of both batters into prepared pans and swirl lightly with a knife.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool before frosting.
